The government put an employment number on the Dholera zone: 21,000 persons

A Press Information Bureau release of 16 April 2026 states that the Dholera special economic zone is spread over 66.166 hectares and is poised to provide employment to 21,000 persons.

Carried by credible news outlets. No official document confirms it yet.

That is a projection rather than a headcount, which is why it is labelled a target here. The current headcount is not stated anywhere we can reach and is printed as unknown.

It is also a different number from the one usually quoted about Dholera. Tata's own material and this wire's existing fab entry carry more than 20,000 direct and indirect jobs. The two figures come from different sources and count different things, and merging them into one claim would be wrong. The release independently gives the same 66.166 hectare area as the gazette, which is a useful cross-check on the land figure.

What the source itself says

PIB release 2252649 of 16 April 2026 states the SEZ 'will be spread over 66.166 hectares of land and is poised to provide employment to 21000 persons' and calls it India's first chip fabrication plant.

Several of these documents are large PDFs on government portals that move without notice. Where a document has no stable deep link we cite it by its number and date so it can be found again. See the source register for what each document is and what we took from it.

If one of these links has moved or we have read it wrong, write to [email protected] and we will fix the entry and say so on the corrections page. For how we decide what counts as confirmed, see how we source and correct. For the full dated history of the region, see the Dholera timeline. For any term above you do not recognise, see the glossary.
