Dholera has been testing pavements made with recycled plastic, in partnership with IIT Delhi
DICDL's 2023-24 report records research and development with IIT Delhi on geocell material made with 60 percent recycled HDPE plastic for building pavements, alongside its World Environment Day activities on 5 June 2023.
Confirmed by an official document: a government release, a filing, or the company's own published statement.
A geocell is a honeycomb of plastic laid into the ground and filled with soil or aggregate, and it holds the fill in place so a road can be built on weak ground. Weak ground is exactly what Dholera has, because the region sits on saline coastal flats. Making the honeycomb from recycled plastic is the part that is new here.
The same entry in the report covers plantation at the activation area, at the ABCD Building and at the sewage and water treatment plant sites, an environment health and safety awareness session, and a plastic waste collection drive at the construction site on 3 June 2023. What the report does not say is how much pavement has actually been built with the material, so that stays unknown.
