Three thousand two hundred trees are growing in Dholera's salt flats inside plastic drums
DeshGujarat reported on 4 June 2026 that more than 3,200 trees of 15 species are growing at Block No. 29 in Dholera using a drum plantation technique, with the saplings planted in August 2025 inside plastic drums and a further 50,000 planned.
Carried by credible news outlets. No official document confirms it yet.
The technique was developed by the Ahmedabad Social Forestry Division of the Gujarat Forest Department and funded by DSIRDA. The drum holds a pocket of workable soil around the roots and keeps the surrounding saline ground away from them long enough for the tree to establish. Dholera is coastal salt flat, which is why nothing much grows there and why the planting figures in every brochure about the region.
The survival rate is not reported and neither is the cost, so both are unknown. A tree planted in August 2025 and standing in June 2026 has got through one monsoon and one summer, which is a real result, but 3,200 trees against a stated 50,000 more is a pilot.
