Ultra high purity welding is the specialised welding used on the gas and chemical lines inside a chip plant, where a single contaminating particle inside a pipe joint can spoil a wafer. It is a genuine bottleneck skill and India has had very little of it.
The programme is run by the Tata Indian Institute of Skills with the Gujarat government and Tata Electronics, and is described as the first cleanroom training facility set up inside an industrial training institute in the country. The course runs six weeks, two at the institute in Ahmedabad and four in the Dholera cleanroom, and is open to students from any trade. Placement outcomes are not recorded.
